BIO
Fractal Quintet is a modern jazz band from Portland, Oregon, led by guitarist, vocalist, and composer Libby Roach. Rooted in the jazz tradition of improvisation, the music is anything but traditional. Roach’s strong sense of melody allows her to integrate diverse styles ranging from Latin jazz, drum & bass, to odd-meter indie rock, into cohesive compositions that are accessible to general audiences and jazzophiles alike. This genre-bending quintet calls the music “Cinematic Indie Jazz.” Or as Libby states simply, “It’s jazz, but you might really like it!”
REVIEWS
"Precipieces... features some rockish guitar shredding and backbeats, Latin rhythms, odd meters worthy of Frank Zappa or Mr. Bungle, and other non-standard angularities, along with more familiar jazz improvisation and grooves... Yet the offbeat combinations never feel forced or self-consciously avant-garde... Precipieces bountifully blends a diverse band of Portland jazzers... into a tight, wide-ranging ensemble that can snag listeners across the jazz-rock spectrum with its singular groove."
-- Brett Campbell, Willamette Week (May 2014)
"The FQ’s debut album “Precipieces” mixes Latin, soul and fusion in an intoxicating mix of modern jazz that would appeal to fans of everyone from Pat Metheny to Primus, Bjork to “Porgy and Bess.”"
-- Rob Cullivan, Portland Tribune (May 2014)
